First Look vs. No First Look: Which Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions couples ask when planning their wedding day is whether or not they should have a first look.
And while there is no “right” answer, the best choice is the one that feels most like you!
A first look is a private moment between the couple before the ceremony. Traditionally, couples wait until the ceremony to see each other for the first time. Both options can create beautiful, emotional photographs they simply create a different experience for your day.
The First Look
A first look gives you a quiet moment together before the excitement of the ceremony begins.
Instead of seeing each other for the first time surrounded by your guests, you get a few minutes to slow down, take a breath, and actually be present with one another.
From a photography perspective, a first look can also create a little more flexibility in your timeline. We can take couple portraits and wedding party photos before the ceremony, which may give you more time to enjoy your cocktail hour and celebrate with your guests afterward.
And some of my favorite images come from these moments when couples aren't thinking about the camera at all—just looking at each other, laughing, hugging, or taking in the fact that they're finally getting married.
Waiting Until the Ceremony
There is something incredibly special about waiting.
If you've always imagined walking down the aisle and seeing your partner for the first time in front of your closest family and friends, there is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing tradition.
That moment can be incredibly emotional and meaningful, and your photographer can capture everything from the anticipation beforehand to your partner's reaction as you walk down the aisle.
The trade-off is simply that more of your portraits will need to happen after the ceremony, which can make your timeline a little tighter.
So, Which Should You Choose?
Ask yourself what matters most.
Do you want a quiet moment together before the ceremony? A first look may be perfect.
Have you always dreamed of that traditional aisle reveal? Wait for the ceremony.
Want a little bit of both? There are other options too, such as a private letter exchange or a first touch around a corner without actually seeing each other.
At the end of the day, your wedding photographs should reflect your relationship and your experience, not what you feel like you are supposed to do.
Whatever you choose, my goal is to make sure you can be fully present in the moment and I'll be there to capture it as it naturally unfolds!
