What to Wear for Family Photos!

(Without Matching Too Much)

One of the biggest questions I get before family sessions is: “What should we wear?” Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The goal is to coordinate, not completely match. When outfits complement each other naturally, your photos feel more timeless, relaxed, and authentic.


Here are a few simple tips to help you plan outfits for your next family photo session!

Start With a Color Palette

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color, choose 2–4 colors that work well together. Neutral tones and earthy colors tend to photograph beautifully in every season.

Some favorite combinations:

  • Cream + tan + sage
  • Rust + beige + denim
  • Soft blue + white + gray
  • Olive + brown + cream

Soft, cohesive tones help your photos look polished without feeling too “matchy.”


Coordinate, Don’t Copy

Everyone in white shirts and jeans can feel dated. Instead, mix colors, textures, and patterns in a way that still feels connected.

For example:

  • Mom in a flowy neutral dress
  • Dad in a textured button-up
  • Kids in complementary colors

This adds depth and movement to your photos.


Choose Comfortable Clothing

If you’re not comfortable, it will show. Wear outfits you can move, walk, sit, and cuddle in naturally.

For kids especially:

  • Avoid itchy fabrics
  • Make sure shoes fit well
  • Bring backup outfits if needed

Comfort leads to more genuine smiles and moments.


Think About the Season

Your outfits should fit both the weather and the overall vibe of your session.


Spring

Soft pastels, creams, and light layers


Summer

Lightweight fabrics and breathable neutral tones


Fall

Warm earthy tones like rust, olive, brown, and beige


Winter

Layers, sweaters, textures, and deeper neutrals


Avoid Large Logos & Neon Colors

Bright neon colors and large graphics can distract from the connection and emotion in your photos. Simple outfits with subtle texture usually photograph best.


Add Texture & Layers

Texture makes photos feel more visually interesting. Think:

  • Knit sweaters
  • Linen dresses
  • Hats
  • Layers
  • Flowy fabrics

These small details add movement and dimension to your gallery.


Don’t Forget the Shoes

Shoes matter more than most people think! Neutral shoes or boots usually work best and help complete the overall look.


Most Importantly — Be Yourselves

The best family photos come from genuine connection, laughter, and interaction. Your outfits should feel like an elevated version of YOU, not costumes.


You don’t need perfectly matching outfits for beautiful photos, just clothing that feels comfortable, coordinated, and authentic to your family.
